8 Milestones in the History of Dysport
Dysport is an exciting alternative to Botox. We offer both at Sculpt Spa!

For facial rejuvenation, we have a complete toolkit of options. To determine the right treatment, or combination of treatments, make sure to schedule a free consultation with one of our facial rejuvenation experts. They can explain about the dermal filler options as well as anti-wrinkle treatments.

For anti-wrinkle solutions, your Sculpt Spa expert can help you determine if Botox injections or Dysport treatments are the more appropriate application for you.

Dysport & Botox: What’s the Difference?

The two are based on the same basic botulism toxin but vary slightly. From your consultation, your expert can point out which has the most appropriate benefits for you.

Botox and Dysport are both Botulinum toxin type A and are injectables that cause temporary muscle weakness. They each have their own FDA approval to treat glabellar frown lines (facial wrinkles). Botox is popular for the treatment of dynamic wrinkles of the face caused by contraction of the underlying facial muscles every time you smile, laugh or frown.

Your Sculpt Spa esthetician will inject it into certain areas of the face to relax the muscles, so they do not contract allowing the overlying skin to remain smooth and unwrinkled. Botox injections have been used safely and effectively to treat ophthalmologic and neurologic disorders for over 20 years.

Our Dysport treatments in Las Vegas use the same toxin base. It is a fast-acting and relatively long-lasting prescription injection that is also proven to smooth moderate to severe frown lines. It has been approved in 69 countries and has 25 years of clinical experience. While not as well-known as Botox, it has huge popularity from those who have had treatments. Studies have shown that 97% of users felt the results looked natural, 95% of users were satisfied with their treatments and felt confident, attractive, and happy after receiving them.

It is inconclusive as to whether Botox or Dysport works faster. Some research indicates Dysport to be faster, and others indicate Botox. Experts have suggested that individuals react to each differently so finding which works more to your liking is the best course of action.

At Sculpt Spa, you have the choice, and the expert guidance to determine the perfect fit.

Dysport: The Surprising History

Dysport’s history started almost 200 years ago. Here is a timeline tracking key milestones that lead to its development:

1.     1822
German doctor Justinus Kerner, who was also a poet and medical writer, observed and described a lethal condition that was happening at the time. He is credited as being the first to describe botulism to the world. The book in which he described it was called Das Fettgift oder die Fettsäure und ihre Wirkung auf den tierischen Organismus .

2.     1895
One specific case of botulism lead to a significant breakthrough. A group of musicians sat down to a meal of smoked and pickled ham. A week later, three had died and ten were critically ill from the botulism in the tainted meat. A bacteriologist named Emile van Ermengem studied the case and discovered the anaerobic rod-shaped bacterium that produces the botulinum toxin. This discovery set the future of Dysport in motion.

3.     1920
Isolating the specific toxin in the bacterium was a continued challenge. Dr. Herman Sommer made inroads by being able to extract a sludge-like substance that had results in lab animals.

4.     1946
Botulinum neurotoxin Type A is isolated for the first time by biochemist Edward J. Schantz. The isolation was done so military experts could evaluate it as a bioweapon. Schantz convinced them it would not be effective for warfare. He then be came a supplier of the toxin to others to study for more productive uses, one of which became Dysport to use as an anti-wrinkle option.

5.     1960
Botulinum neurotoxin Type A is used to treat strabismus – more commonly known as crossed eyes – in animals and then later in humans.

6.     1987
While treating a patient for blepharospasm, a similar eye condition, Dr. Jean Carruthers discovered Botulinum neurotoxin Type A’s anti-wrinkle capabilities

7.     1991
Dysport becomes available in the UK for the first time. It was used to treat spasms in the face and neck. Manufactured in France, it was also launched in dozens of other countries.

8.     2009
The FDA approves Dysport for use in the United States as a wrinkle treatment. It was picked up and carried by another branded company to compete with Botox.

The application of Dysport varies from Botox. It uses smaller amounts of Botulinum neurotoxin Type A, and spreads more broadly through the muscles of the face. Because of the difference in density, the number of vials needed to accomplish your anti-wrinkle goals may vary between the two options. Talk to your Sculpt Spa expert for details.
