Botox vs Restylane Fillers: 6 Things You Need to Know

Over the last decade, injectable cosmetic treatments have become one of the most popular non-invasive skin rejuvenation techniques in the world of dermatology. Botox still remains the leading injectable treatment in cosmetic dermatology, but dermal fillers – particularly hyaluronic acid fillers like the Restylane family that Sculpt Spa provides– are not far behind.

What are the differences between the two, and which should you choose?

Botox or Restylane: Which One is For Me?

Botox is a neuromodulator designed to relax muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles, Restylane is the most popular brand of hyaluronic acid filler that helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by boosting volume and hydration in the skin. Both work on facial wrinkles like laugh lines, frown lines, crow’s feet, and jowls.

Botox cosmetic treatment uses a neurotoxin, botulinum toxin type A, to “freeze” the nerve signals to frequently used muscles near the injection site. Though the botulinum toxin is derived from the same bacteria that causes botulism, Botox has been used for decades as a safe and effective cosmetic treatment.

Restylane fillers are also safe and effective. Restylane-L, Restylane Lyft, Restylane Contour, Restylane Refyne, Restylane Defyne and Restylane Kysse make up the full dermal filler family menu. Each filler has its own unique characteristics.

Here are the things you need to know as you grapple with the question on whether to receive Botox or Restylane injections.

1.     You don’t need to choose: You can have both
The best approach is to meet with your Sculpt Spa expert and outline your facial rejuvenation goals. They will then make a recommendation on whether Botox or Restylane, or both, is the best course of action to achieve the look you want.

2.     Both are safe and convenient …
Both injectable treatments are an excellent alternative to invasive cosmetic procedures that a plastic surgeon might offer and require virtually no downtime. They are both FDA approved.

3.     … But they work in different ways
As mentioned, Botox specifically targets the muscles and relaxes them, reducing the lines they cause. Restylane plumps the skin with hydration and stimulates new collagen production in the body. Through this process, improved skin texture and volume is achieved, which in turn improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on the surface of the skin.

4.     Consider what caused the wrinkles you are targeting
Are your target areas caused by a wrinkle created by repetitive motion, or is it caused by depletion of facial volume and sagging? Botox can affect the appearance of dynamic wrinkles, as well as improved firmness and lift caused by long term facial movements. Fine lines and wrinkles not related to an active facial expression, as well as sagging and volume loss, are more optimally treated with Restylane.

5.     Each can beautify your lips
When it comes to cosmetic treatment for your lips, the optimal treatment depends on what about the lips is being treated. If you want lip augmentation or lip enhancement, you’ll likely be a candidate for Restylane. If the concern is vertical lip lines or fine lines on the lips themselves, Restylane will be able to plump the lips and reduce the appearance of these lines while contouring to the movement of the lips with advanced XpresHAn technology.
For patients who want a more dramatic appearance, Restylane Kysse may be best choice. If the concern is fine lines and wrinkles around the mouth, both Botox and Restylane can offer restorative benefits to this area. Botox is an effective treatment for those lines caused by facial muscles, and Restylane is an excellent tool in correcting moderate-to-deeply worn facial wrinkles by the mouth. In many cases, patients will opt to use both Botox and Restylane in their Sculpt Spa treatment plan in order to plump the lips and offer a youthful appearance to the mouth and lips.

6.     They do not last the same amount of time
Everyone is different, but generally your Restylane treatments will last longer than your Botox service. This only means that you may need to set up follow up Botox appointments during the timeframe.
