Botox Shots: A Crash Course

Botox was the first ever microbial injection that was able to be used to treat an ever-growing number of health conditions and diseases. Not the least of these uses is the most popular: facial rejuvenation.

It is certainly unique in health science since the idea of injecting otherwise deadly bacteria into the body was not an intuitive direction for scientists and doctors to explore. Because it is an incredibly versatile treatment method, studies continue to find even more additional ways to use it.

The bacteria used in Botox is called Clostridium botulinum, and it was first discovered when there was an outbreak of botulism, the deadly disease which paralyzes the respiratory muscles.

When botulism bacteria was discovered, scientists then worked to isolate the toxin in crystalline form. In the 1970s, scientists discovered beneficial ways to use the isolated botulism toxin. They found it could be used successfully to treat strabismus, more commonly known as crossed eyes. Allergan then licensed the treatment of strabismus and branded the toxin “Botox.”

The FDA has since approved Botox for a variety of health procedures, including the treatment of migraines, upper lip spasticity, bladder incontinence and more.

Of course, the most famous and widely demanded use is for the reduction of facial wrinkles.

Botox and Your Face: How Botox Keeps You Looking Younger

When you make facial expressions — smiling, squinting, frowning, or smoking — you cause wrinkles to appear on your face. These wrinkles and fine lines become more and more imbedded over time and as your face loses elasticity.

Botox freezes the facial muscles and helps erase these lines. It can’t reduce the appearance of all permanent wrinkles, but injections can even help soften those and make them less apparent.

3 Ways September is Botox’s Month

As we a new September gets underway, it is a great time to celebrate your skin’s health. Here are three major ways that Botox acts as a health agent for your skin:

1.     Botox and wrinkle prevention
By weakening the muscles, Botox prevents them from moving and causing wrinkles. Most people wait until they start to see wrinkles before they seek Botox treatment, but preventative treatment uses Botox to treat wrinkles before they emerge. This helps keep deeper and more permanent wrinkles from taking hold. Also, you may require less Botox each time as you get on a regular schedule.

2.     Botox can help prevent pimples
Pimples or zits develop when your pores are blocked by bacteria, oil dead cells, or dirt. As you age, your pores become bigger as the skin around them sags. Larger pores cause oilier skin and a buildup of bacteria and sebum. When the oil begins to oxidize, you experience black heads and pimples. Botox treating hyperhidrosis reduces sweating and the production of sebaceous oil that blocks the pores and causes clogs. The Botox Las Vegas injection in the facial muscles helps them relax and block the nerves that control the sweat glands hindering the functions of sweating temporarily. It is important to note that when the Botox effect wears off, facial nerves will begin to grow and reconnect with the sweat glands and the sweating functions will resume.

Studies have shown that Botox decreases sebum production by about 30 percent. Subjects in the study saw a reduction in facial oil production and a decrease in the size of their pores.

3.     Botox can improve your skin elasticity
Your skin’s collagen and elastin levels keep it tight, firm, and elastic. Your Sculpt Spa Botox treatment can increase the amount of elastin and collagen improving your skin’s elasticity. Elastin is the protein found in connective tissues which allows those tissues to return to their original form after being stretched or contracted. It is the protein in your skin that allows it to return to its original shape after being pinched or poked. In conjunction with elastin, collagen is the most abundant protein in your body. It gives structure to your skin and helps with the blood clotting process. It is considered to be the glue that connects the body together as an important element in bone muscles, tendons, and ligaments. As you age, your collagen and elastin production decreases, and your skin sags. Studies demonstrate Botox’s ability to increase the amount of elastin and collagen in the skin. For the women in the study, Botox enhanced skin elasticity for up to 4 months. There are three possible reasons for this effect. It is possible that the cells that make collagen and elastin could contain a receptor that reacts Botox. It is possible that Botox acts as an antioxidant in skin tissue and allows skin to heal from waste product harm that has accumulated on the skin. It is also possible that the collagen and elastin are given a chance to replenish because the skin’s otherwise constant motion has been curtailed.
