How Botox Works: A Quick Primer

Derived from a botulism toxin, it was discovered that in small, targeted doses, it has some amazing benefits. When we inject it for you, it is an easy way to enhance your natural beauty. It lessens the appearance of wrinkles. It is non-invasive and administered in a fast procedure. The results are immediate and last for months. We can answer all the questions you might have as well!

Botox injections block chemical signals from your nerves. These signals cause muscles to contract. Above we described how the most common use of Botox is for Sculpt Spa to temporarily relax the facial muscles that cause wrinkles in the forehead and around the eyes. Botox’s value extends beyond being an aesthetic powerhouse, however.

Botox Can Treat 7 Common Health Issues

Botox injections are also used to treat seven significant health conditions:

1.     Chronic migraine
Chronic migraine is having at least 15 headache days a month, with at least 8 days of having headaches with migraine features, for more than 3 months. A migraine is a headache that can cause severe throbbing pain or a pulsing sensation, usually on one side of the head. Chronic headache begins as less frequent headache episodes but gradually become a more frequent headache pattern. If you experience migraines more than 15 days a month, Botox injections may help reduce headache frequency. Botox is injected around pain fibers that are involved in headaches. It enters the nerve endings around where it is injected and blocks the release of chemicals involved in pain transmission. This prevents activation of pain networks in the brain. It tends to prevent migraine headaches before they start. It takes time and a few sessions for the Botox to be strongly effective.

2.     Hyperhidrosis
This describes excessive sweating that occurs even when the temperature isn’t hot and you’re not exerting yourself. There are two types of hyperhidrosis: primary hyperhidrosis and secondary hyperhidrosis. Primary hyperhidrosis is usually inherited, its cause is unknown, which means one of your family members may have had it. Primary hyperhidrosis begins in childhood and worsens with puberty, especially in women. Hyperhidrosis is thought to be the result of a problem with the sympathetic nervous system. Botox is a particularly effective treatment for focal hyperhidrosis. Botox injections use botulinum toxin to block the nerve signals responsible for sweating, stopping the sweat glands from producing too much sweat.

3.     Lazy eye
Lazy eye (amblyopia) is reduced vision in one eye caused by abnormal visual development early in life. The weaker — or lazy — eye often wanders inward or outward. The most common cause of lazy eye is an imbalance in the muscles responsible for positioning the eye. Botox is injected into one of the muscles that move the eye. The injection temporarily weakens the muscle, allowing the eyes to realign (straighten).

4.     Bladder dysfunction
Overactive bladder is caused by a malfunction of the detrusor muscle. Overactive bladder, or OAB, causes a frequent and sudden urge to urinate that may be difficult to control. You may feel like you need to pass urine many times during the day and night, and may also experience unintentional loss of urine. Botox injections reduce urinary incontinence by affecting the detrusor muscle.

5.     Cervical dystonia
Cervical dystonia is involuntary muscle contractions in the neck that cause abnormal movements and postures of the neck and head. It is often painful. In some cases, these abnormal contractions may be sustained or continuous; in others, they may be present as spasms that can resemble tremor.  Botox is delivered by injections into the muscles that contract to produce most of the disease symptoms.

6.     Muscle contractures Some neurological conditions, such as cerebral palsy, can cause your limbs to pull in toward your center. A contracture occurs when your muscles, tendons, joints, or other tissues tighten or shorten causing a deformity. Inactivity and scarring from an injury or burn ARE causes of contracture. Contracture symptoms include pain and loss of movement in the joint. In some cases, these contracted muscles can be relaxed with Botox, which is injected into the affected muscle.

7.     Eye twitching
Eye twitching is a common condition. It may run your family as it is often hereditary. The exact cause is not known, but thought to originate in the motor nerves of the brain. Botox is used in the muscles that those nerves signal. It is injected in very small quantities into the muscles surrounding the eye. This may relieve spasms for several months, but the effects gradually wear off and need repeated treatments.
